Agriculture and the Environment

Bulgaria enjoys a rich and diverse endowment of natural resources — from the productive soils of the Danube River Plain and Thracian Valley to the forested hillsides of the Balkan and Rhodope Mountains, from the scenic Danube River to the beautiful Black Sea coast. These resources are an important national treasure. Their wise use in economic pursuits and in promoting a sustainable and attractive environment can contribute importantly to the future growth and well being of Bulgaria and its people.

In recognition of this, the Foundation is interested in supporting private and public efforts to increase the productivity of Bulgarian agriculture and to protect and enhance Bulgaria’s natural environment. Special attention will be devoted to supporting the development, dissemination, and application of new technologies and practices. The Foundation favors approaches that:

  • Are multidisciplinary and build relationships among institutions.
  • Incorporate public-private partnerships.
  • Support the education and training of scientists, administrators, teachers, managers, and policymakers.
  • Create an attraction for Bulgarian young professionals to remain in (or return to) Bulgaria to work in the fields of agriculture and the environment.
  • Facilitate the commercialization of research results and the transfer of technology and methods to practical application.
  • Utilize the experience and expertise of US institutions and enterprises.

Each Fellow will work one-on-one with a U.S. mentor who will coordinate the Fellow’s training and visit the Fellow’s home institution after completion of the training. The USDA will select U.S. host institutions and mentors for each Fellow.
