Archeology/Preservation of Historical Sites

The ABF will look for ways to help promote tourism by capitalizing on Bulgaria’s fascinating and important history, working toward identifying and developing a sufficient critical mass of historic attractions. This effort will include helping with attractive displays and accommodations that will help Bulgaria become a “not to be missed” travel destination.

Bulgaria has a number of increasingly prominent archeologists doing traditional excavations and assessments on Thracian tombs and other prehistoric finds, as well as on the Greco-Roman and Bulgar Empire periods. The ABF plans to work with archeologists, museum directors, and appropriate government ministries to facilitate optimization of the development of these sites and the preservation and display of associated antiquities.

For the first time, science can begin shedding light on important questions about early peoples through genetic studies of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA that can conclusively show lineage and evolutionary relationships. Breakthroughs in this area could attract world attention to Bulgaria’s amazing history. For example, the ABF is considering funding a scientific examination of the ancient relationships among the Indoeuropean and Turkic-Mongolian steppe invaders who eventually came to Central Europe and the Balkans, and investigation into the environmental conditions that could have compelled some of these migrations.
