Education / Libraries

As a nation, Bulgaria needs educated citizens. Far-reaching dissemination of knowledge, whether through schools or through libraries, is crucial to that education. The Foundation will seek to be a force behind improving such dissemination by supporting existing, successful models, and by creating new ones with the help of knowledgeable and imaginative Bulgarians dedicated to the long-lasting betterment of their country.

In the area of Education, the Foundation will begin its work by narrowing its focus to secondary and higher education, looking for funding opportunities which will creatively enhance the quality of teaching and learning in those sectors. The Foundation will also be interested in supporting professional development, serious academic research and short-term internships for study outside of Bulgaria.

The Foundation will seek to encourage conference and seminar discussion of Foundation interests, and be willing to fund resultant worthy projects.

Where organizations do not exist to develop the Foundation’s interests, funding formation of NGO’s to reach these goals will be a possibility.

In the area of libraries, the Foundation will also be interested in creative ideas for supporting and strengthening the public library system in Bulgaria and in the eventual electronic linking of library systems throughout the country and the world. Digitization of special collections in the nation’s research libraries might also be contemplated in the future.

Announcements

The America for Bulgaria Foundation is pleased to announce the funding of the American Corner Library Project and the Institute for Studies of the Recent Past, its first two grants.

The American Corner Library is located at the Sofia City Library and offers an inviting environment for Bulgarians to research and enjoy American books, films, and magazines and to attend lectures, exhibits, and cultural events. Funds from the ABF assisted in the remodeling and refurbishment of the American Corner and increasing its collection of materials. (Funded in August 2008)

The Institute for Studies of the Recent Past will support efforts to provide a more balanced, well-researched and documented picture of the country’s communist past. This will be accomplished through academic research, by expanding the documentary database of studies on the communist period, and by creating opportunities for public discussion among historians, academic researchers, politicians, journalists, and a wide circle of active and concerned citizens. (Funded in July 2008)
